Bashert

The story goes like this: the Rabbis studied and talked about marriage and God and everything God intended for marriage for thousands of years. They decided that there was no word that properly captured the way God felt about marriage. So they created one: 'Bashert'. It means more than a simple English translation can allow, but the best translations I've found are "a match made in Heaven," which is another way of saying "What God brings together..."; "soul-mate", the mate God intended for your soul, to complete you. Your rib if you will. The one person who you want to leave all others and cleave to, becoming one flesh, a cord of three strands that is not easily broken.

I've found my bashert. And I wrote that word in Hebrew script on the ring I asked her to wear.

Friends, I'm engaged! On February 18 I asked Verity to marry me and she said, and I quote, "Of Course!" So that's where I've been for the last month - designing her ring (including several really personal carvings on the sides - brothers, you must consider this option, and when you do, give me a call and I'll lead you to a good person), meeting her dad for breakfast, stressing out because I wanted to ask her outside at this specific park, but the night was coming and the weather was not cooperating (I did it anyway), and much much more.

I have a "best of" planned sometime soon - a select few notes that capture the alternating joy and ahhhhhhhhhh! moments of the week leading up to it, stuff that I wrote but couldn't post at the time because I hadn't asked her yet - as well as a couple thoughts from scripture that I've wanted to share for awhile. I'll try to write a couple more posts soon, but I'm engaged and quite frankly I want to hang out with my bride-to-be, so I'll write when I can.

For now, suffice it to say that this is just about the coolest feeling this side of salvation!
